Hurricane Season Gutter Checklist for Florida Homeowners

Hurricane Season Gutter Checklist for Florida Homeowners

Florida's hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30. Your gutters play a critical role during storms — they're the system that routes massive volumes of rain away from your roof, fascia, foundation, and living space.

A gutter system that fails during a hurricane doesn't just mean water damage. It means water inside your walls, foundation erosion, and roof damage that your insurance may fight you on if they determine the gutters were poorly maintained.

Here's the pre-season checklist.

Pre-Hurricane Season Gutter Checklist

Complete these before June 1:

1. Clean All Gutters and Downspouts

Remove all debris from every gutter run and flush every downspout until water runs freely at grade. Clogged gutters during a hurricane are a force multiplier for damage:

  • Backed-up water pushes under roof shingles
  • Debris-weighted gutters tear away from fascia in high winds
  • Overflowing water dumps directly at the foundation when you need drainage most

2. Inspect Every Hanger

Walk the perimeter and check that every hanger is tight against the fascia. Push up on the gutter at multiple points — it shouldn't move.

Critical: If your gutters use nail-type spike-and-ferrule hangers, plan to upgrade to screw-in hidden hangers before storm season. Nails pull out in sustained high winds. Screws don't.

3. Check Gutter-to-Fascia Connection

Look for gaps between the back edge of the gutter and the fascia board. Gaps mean water can get behind the gutter during wind-driven rain — exactly the condition that causes fascia rot and wall leaks during hurricanes.

4. Verify Downspout Routing

Every downspout should discharge at least 4-6 feet away from your foundation. During a hurricane, the volume of water hitting your yard is extreme. Downspout extensions that dump water right at the foundation are worse than useless — they concentrate the flow at the worst possible location.

Check that extensions are secure and pointed away from the house, that splash blocks are in place, and that any underground drainage pipes are clear.

5. Inspect Soffit and Fascia

Damaged soffit creates wind entry points during hurricanes. Wind entering through soffit gaps creates uplift pressure inside the attic that can lift your roof.

Look for:

  • Gaps between soffit panels
  • Loose or missing soffit sections
  • Rotted fascia boards (soft spots, peeling paint)
  • Holes from pest damage

Any of these should be repaired before storm season.

6. Trim Overhanging Branches

Branches within 6 feet of your roofline are gutter wreckers during storms. They break off, land on gutters, and tear sections away from the house. Trim them now — not the day before a storm when every tree service in Tampa is booked.

7. Document Your System

Take photos of your entire gutter system, soffit, and fascia before storm season. If you file an insurance claim after a hurricane, having dated "before" photos proves the condition of your system prior to the storm. Take photos from every side of the house, including close-ups of any existing damage you've already noted.

8. Check Gutter Guards

If you have gutter guards, verify they're secure and not lifting at any point. Loose guards catch wind and can peel off during storms, becoming projectiles. Make sure all fastening clips or screws are tight.

After a Hurricane

Once the storm passes and it's safe to inspect:

  1. Do a ground-level visual check — look for sagging sections, detached downspouts, displaced guards, or sections pulled away from the fascia
  2. Check for new leaks — run a hose through each section and watch for drips
  3. Clear storm debris — leaves, branches, and shingle granules from the storm clog systems fast
  4. Document any damage immediately with photos and video before cleanup
  5. Don't climb a ladder on a wet roof — wait for dry conditions or call a professional

Storm Damage and Insurance

If your gutters are damaged in a named storm, homeowners insurance typically covers the repair or replacement. Key points:

  • Document everything with dated photos before any cleanup
  • Don't make permanent repairs before the adjuster inspects (temporary tarping is fine)
  • Get a written estimate from a licensed contractor for the insurance company
  • Know your deductible — hurricane deductibles in Florida are typically 2-5% of your home's insured value, which may be higher than the gutter repair cost

The Bottom Line

A $200-$400 pre-season gutter cleaning and inspection is the cheapest hurricane prep you can do. It protects your roof, foundation, fascia, and walls during the most intense rain events your home will face.

Don't wait until June. The best time to prep is now, before every contractor in Tampa is booked solid.
